On the 1st June 2019, a total of 23 students performed the task on site. Two students were unable to join due to food poisoning and high fever. Students were gathered at Taylor’s University at 9.00am and it took around one hour to arrive at the site.  Once they arrived, all of them took all the tools and equipment needed and performed the job assigned to their group.

Group 2: Exterior walls and surrounding (7 students)

Sakash, represent the leader for Group 2 leading the work and delegated the task to the group exterior fairly whereas Vilson from Group 3, took the initiative to lead their group as Royce Kota wasn’t around due to food poisoning.  On-site, the students started off with the cleaning process. They removed the dirt on the wall by using the broom and washed it with water. They clean the surrounding areas and applied 2 layers of prime coat on the exterior walls before painting the mural design.

Group 3: Interior walls and floor transformation (9 students)

In the meantime, group 3 students started cleaning the interior wall and the flooring. Only nine of them were on site and theywere confused at the early stage on the task to be executed as the leader was absent. Other than that, they found that the tools and equipment's weren't on site and they had to share with Group 2. Even though problems occurred, the representatives from Group 3, Vilson took the lead to control the task to be performed. First of all, they removed all the old shelves out which were rotten and rusted, and then they dismantled it outside of the mini-library. Next, they removed all the boards, art works, flags and wall paper from the walls. It’s quite challenging task as there were only nine of them and mostly were girls. They found a lots of bug while removing the furniture out but luckily Group 6 helped them to buy a spray. They sprayed the whole spaces to get rid of the ants and the big lizards. Lastly, the removed the vinyl flooring which is smelly and dirty.

Once it cleared, a few students swept the floors and some removed the dirt on the walls and the top hung of the wire-mesh. Then, they started to paint the first layer of the prime coat on the wall. Due to the lack of brushes and ladder, they have to wait for Group 2 to complete the task, before second layers of applied.

While waiting for the wall treatment, three of the students concentrated on the cleaning part of the flooring. They found the texture of the floor were quite bad and uneven. They washed the floor using the detergent yet the floor condition still look poor. They had a lunch while awaiting for the floor to dry. At the end, the decided to visit the site in the upcoming week as painting and treatment of floor couldn’t be done concurrently.

Group 4: Shelves and books arrangement (5 students)

Nadhirah was in-charge to determine the job delivered accordingly. The work was carried out as planned.  A few of Orang Asli Children, led by Ms. May helping the Group 4 team to sort the books and moving out the old furniture. Sadly, some of the books were torn and some books were fully covered with ants inside. There a lot of insects surrounded the areas once the shelving has been taken out. Some students screamed loudly as they were shocked to see the big lizard around the mini-library which they have never seen before.

Group 6: Pre and post, pictures, video, food and logistics (3 students)

Roxane and Yanyi from Group 6 were assigned to handle the breakfast and lunch, while Royce was busy taking pictures and videos all over the spaces recording the process.

A few matters arise on site. Firstly, due to the absence of Royce Kota, most of the tools and equipment from Group 2 to be shared together with Group 3. They had to share the brushes and taking turns to use the tall ladder. Due to that, the process of painting a long time from what it’s expected. Other than that, the cleaning of the flooring needs to be done in the next visit to wait for the prime layer coat to be dry. The last issue arise was the weather on site as it affects the duration of drying the paint. The whole process took roughly 7 hours and before the group of students departs, they kept the tools and equipment and ensure that everything is in the right place. All the students took memorable pictures together with the Orang Asli at 6.30pm before they depart from the place. The students felt happy and satisfied with the work that they did on that day. They can’t wait to see the full transformation on the day of the launch.
