Group 5: Interactive Fun-learning Aids

Group 5 made some changes according to the feedback given by Mr. Edwin and Ms. Norji in regards to the design of the interactive fun learning aids. They made an appointment with Ms. Norji to discuss further on the ideas and planning. Once approval granted, they standardized materials to be used and items to be purchased before the actual artwork start. As for the base, they have decided to use the MDF board and to laser-cut all the graphical alphabets and subject on the surface. The final interactive learning aids were as below:

  1. English - Alphabetic Puzzle and Word Game

  2. Mathematic - Snakes and Ladders, Abacus and Spinning Cubes

  3. Science - The Growth Observation, Taste and Food Chain

  4. Arts - Play Dough and Painting Activities

For Group 5, the learning aid was expected to be completed before Week 11. They were required to perform the work weekly phase by phase at Taylor’s University and towards the completion, the progression was extremely amazing.

As for the English group, the Alphabetic Puzzle and Word Game was done by Alifa, Hay Ze, Maeesha, Hiba and Thili.  Hiba and Thili concentrated on the Alphabetic puzzle aid using the AutoCAD software. They determined the appropriate size of the alphabets to fit on 1 A0 board and ensure all the letters and pictures seen clearly. Once determined and prescribed, they sent the word for laser cutting at Block E, Level G with the help of Mr. Ahmad and Mr. Fandi. Besides that, students managed to use the bottle caps to make the words interactive on the surface.  They placed a box at the Corridor, Block E5 for other students to drop-off the empty water bottles for their usage. The main idea behind the bottle cap was to make it more economical as well as recycled from things that they had already owned so as to keep the budget at a maximum low.

As for the Science team, Joe, JT, and Qila decided to design The Growth Observation, Taste and Food Chain learning aid. They focused on human anatomy, human 5 senses, and the weather wheel. They split the task among themselves in the different division which concentrated on the colour scheme and composition task, the laser cutting and material sourcing task as well as assembling and painting task. They work were done according to the time frame.

For the Mathematic team, they were designing the Snakes and Ladders, Abacus and Spinning Cubes learning aid. Parisa, Tisya and Yi Jie had brainstormed the ideas while David tried to innovate into a 3D model using Sketchup software.

The idea was to create a game which easily played as well as to avoid confusion because the age group is between 4 to 10 years old. Hence, the most basic abacus cubes ideas generated, but instead of using the ABCs, the numbers will be applied. For the answer part, the whiteboard were applied to avoid magnet usage due to risk and possibilities.

The process started with the 3D print, unfortunately, they were facing some problems at the earlier stage. After a consult with Mr. Ahmed, the students decided to split the plane per pieces rather than the whole cubes as it took 15 hours to complete. The initial idea was to 3D-print all the elements for the Snake & Ladder, but since it was not working out with 3d-printing due to file errors, they proposed another solution as they didn't have much time and need to start assembling the fun learning aids soonest possible. Two of the group members, Parisa and David had leftover acrylics from previous projects so they decided to recycle the acrylic to laser-cut the 'snakes'.

On the 11th May 2019, the English and Mathematic group went out to hunt for materials to be used for their learning aids. They survey and compare the price, quality, and quantity needed for the fun-learning aids at Art friend and Daiso, Curve Mall. The students from the arts group decided to do the colour match, puzzle and built it games.

For the Arts team, they designed a color matching learning kit, where there will be different shapes of different colours applied on the surface . The children will need to stick back the shape according to the color. The second one is a puzzle. There will be different shapes of the puzzle, and the children will need to fit the shapes into the space given. The third one will be the build-up game. Children allow showing their creativity by forming any kind of artworks, such as house, car or animals. The students from each group mostly worked on AutoCAD and then exported the files for laser cutting format.
